How Does Winter Affect Our Skin?

Winter is finally here, and as much as we love the chilly cold weather our skin doesn’t like it that much.

In winter humidity usually decreases and the atmosphere becomes drier. This causes a change in the skin’s epidermis as cold temperatures reduce the skin’s external layer so skin moisture gets drawn away and you end up with dry skin.

What can we do?

Avoid long, hot showers.

We all love a long hot bath in winter, but it can strip away all the important oils your skin needs.

Instead, use warm/lukewarm water, and not only for showers, also when you wash your face and hands.

Regulate your temperature

The fluctuation between cold winter winds and dry indoor heat can cause some skin conditions to act up, such as eczema or psoriasis.

Regulate your temperature and keep your heater as low as possible to help the skin acclimate to the temperature easily

HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE!

Hydrate on the inside as well as the outside.

Winter is when we drink less water because we lack the sensation of thirst compared to other seasons, which leads to drier skin.

Set a reminder and make sure you drink enough water to keep your skin well hydrated.

Also, adding hyaluronic acid to your night routine will effectively hydrate and replenish your skin.

Wet-to-dry Episodes

Avoid excessively washing your hands or doing any similar activity like washing the dishes, and when you do make sure you follow up by using a moisturizer with no alcohol.

Pay attention to your hands and lips:

It’s important to include your hands and lips in your routine

Also, avoid licking your lips as it can damage the lips. And regularly use a conditioning balm to avoid chapped lips

Winter can be challenging, but with small continuous steps, you can still have the perfect skin you aim for!
